Expert urges FG to use PPP to improve healthcare

Expert urges FG to use PPP to improve healthcare

Dr Aminu Mai, General Manager, Hospital Management Board, FCT, urged Federal and state governments to leverage on Public Private Partnership initiatives to address the health challenges in their states.

He gave the advice on Friday at the Annual General Meeting and Scientific session of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), FCT chapter in Abuja.

The theme of the session is ‘Medicine in the 21 century’ with sub-theme, ‘Menace of quackery’.

The general manager described PPP as the surest way in addressing the challenges bedeviling the nation’s health system.

Mai, who chaired the occasion, identified some of the challenges in the sector as inadequate human resource, health care financing, per capital expenditure, substandard equipment, and non-implementation of policies among others.

He decried poor remuneration of health workers across board brain drain and increase in medical tourism. as worrisome.

Mai called for increased friendly working environment and improvement in the standard of equipment for health personnel to work, among others.

He also urged government to explore opportunities in PPP to drive investment into healthcare industry to enable it address deficiency in infrastructure, equipment, medical supplies and provide suitable working environment for the professionals.

Mai said the measure would instil confidence in the sector, ensure efficient service delivery, attract high patronage and to curb medical tourism, among others.

Dr Chiedozie Achonwa, NMA Chairman, FCT, said the theme and sub-theme were carefully selected to enlighten physicians on the role advance technology had been playing in medicine and to sustain the fight against quackery.

The chairman expressed concern on the effect of quacks in the health sector, adding that they had inflicted series of complications on large number of people seeking health, in their inordinate quest for money.

He called on health regulatory agencies like the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to rise to the responsibility of ensuring of routine publication of doctors’ practicing in the country.

Achonwa also advised them to ensure stiffer punishment for perpetrators of quackery to restore the confidence of the general public in the medical profession.

He said such effort would also afford patients to achieve their desired to access healthcare services.(NAN)
